The wall that reads like milled timber
A board-formed retaining wall is a poured concrete wall where the forms themselves are rough-sawn boards. When the forms come off, the concrete carries the wood grain knots, saw marks, and all. It’s a finish that feels like it belongs on a mountain property: structural, weather-honest, and quietly expensive-looking.
Where it fits
- Lakefront retaining walls at Priest Lake and Coeur d’Alene.
- Terraced landscape walls on hillside custom homes around Sandpoint.
- Entry walls, seat walls, and planter walls at the front of a property.
- Foundation walls that are exposed to view, where a smooth form finish would look like a parking garage.
How we build one
- Select the boards. Rough-sawn cedar or pine, graded by texture. We pre-treat the forms with a release agent that preserves the grain.
- Form the wall. Boards are set tight, braced hard, and aligned perfectly a board-formed wall shows every imperfection in the forming.
- Tie the reinforcement. Full rebar cage to the engineer’s spec. A pretty wall that fails structurally is a failure.
- Pour carefully. Slower lifts, thorough vibration to pull the grain onto the face without blowing out the form.
- Strip and cure. Release the boards gently, cure the wall, and apply a penetrating sealer that deepens the color and protects against freeze-thaw.
What it costs vs. a plain wall
More. You’re paying for the boards (often once, sometimes only once depending on reuse), slower pour, and finish-grade craftsmanship. What you’re not paying for is veneer the finish is the structure. No stone to pop off, no stucco to crack, no paint to repaint.
Worth it for the right project
If the wall is going to live in front of the house, in the entry courtyard, or as the landscape architecture of a lakefront property yes. For a behind-the-shop retaining wall, a broom finish and a good sealer will serve you fine.
